Cannon's Jug Stompers-Minglewood Blues (January 30, 1928)

Recorded on January 30, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee. This recording features Gus Cannon on banjo and jug (Cannon created a contraption to hang the jug from his band so he could blow and pick banjo at the same time), Ashley Thompson on vocals and guitar and Noah Lewis on the harp. Minglewood was a lumber camp in Ashley, Tennessee, which was popular amongst musicians in the Mississippi Delta as a "hot spot." This tune became a popular staple of the Grateful Dead. Along with the Memphis Jug Band, Cannon's Jug Stompers was one of the great jug bands of the twenties.

Farmer's Daughter, Little Brown Jug, Girl I Left Behind (December 1929)

Fiddle, accordion, banjo, piano, Neal Smith - vocal, Columbia 33427-F. Neal Smith also played percussion in Packie Dolan's Melody Boys. Farmer's Daughter is better known as the Rose Tree polka; The Farmer's Daughter was later the title of a film released, curiously enough, in 1947, the year of Morrison's death. Little Brown Jug would become very well known from Glenn Miller's 1940 big band arrangement; written in 1869 by Joseph Winner it was a well known folk song/tune in America in subsequent years. Its title and lyrical subject brings to mind the Irish drinking song My Blessings on the Big (or Little) Jug (and It Full), or in Irish, An Cruiscin Lan. The Girl I Left Behind (Me) was a very popular tune with marching bands, has innumerable variations in its lyrics (some quite bawdy), and also has a counterpoint in Irish, An Spailpín Fánach (The Rambling Laborer).

"Reviewer: bluesbanjoman - [5.0 out of 5 stars]
Subject: Indian Blues
Extremely good. I would have never figured that a vina could sound so good playing the blues, as I, a fellow bluesman myself, years ago would have thought a 5-string banjer as only fit for bluegrass and oldtime stuff. Not true at all if you listen to Gus Cannon's "Poor Boy, Long Ways From Home". This is a wonderful recording.
I wish someone would put up the Gus Cannon tune onn here."
