In the Summer of 1963 Rolf Cahn presented a series of live broadcast’s for KPFA from the Cabale, a folk music club in Berkeley, California. In this program you will here excerpts from two of those shows. The first features Cahn on guitar and vocals accompanied by Carl Granich on guitar in the performance of a number of folk and blues standards, including an absolutely beautiful rendition of “Nobody Knows You When You Are Down & Out” with Granich providing some delightful guitar picking. Other highlights include “Alberta Let Your Hair Hang Low” and “Columbus Stockade” the latter of which had particular significance to Cahn as he is probably one of the few people to perform the song after actually having spent some time in that prison after getting into a bit of a pickle during his basic training in the 1940s. The program concludes with a set of three blues songs by Judy Roderick. While some of the lyrics to these songs might strike fans of the Grateful Dead or Mississippi John Hurt as familiar, they are rearranged and beautifully sung by Roderick, a relatively unknown female blues singer who’s raspy style is reminiscent of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick.
