Number 5

Hey Everybody-
Here's number 5, an acoustic collection of some singer-songwriter stuff, acoustic blues, folk & bluegrass, various stuff. There's a nice chunk of stuff from my personal collection of master tapes recorded at Godfrey Daniels Coffeehouse in the early 90's, but also some great stuff I got on great sites like Dime or Hunger City. And of course, from the old-fashioned way of trading with friends like Bob, Durf and even Todd who have been most generous with their cdrs.

Some notes on some of the Godfrey's shows: Richard Shindell show on 10/07/09 was from the late show opening for John Gorka and is from the transfer of the only master cassette, as was the Steve Forbert on 12/02/91 (although there might have been another deck rolling in the sound booth that night) The lineage of the great early Bill Morrissey recording is circumspect but likely a copy of the master cassette, still very clean. The performance is heart-wrenching, as are most of these performances. These shows, plus Townes van Zandt (who visited a few times before passing), Tony Rice, the Fairfield Four, and Michael Jerling represent some of the finest live music a person could hope to witness, I am so happy I had the opportunity to record so much during my time in around there, and peruse the cassette collection still in a shoebox at the time. It's unfortunately much different now in many ways. i do have a bit more to offer up here, and there's still a bunch on past shows if you're interested in old Godfrey's stuff.

The J.J. Cale show from 2004 is one of my favorite shows of his and the Bruce Cockburn thing was from an appearance at a 2 day Lutheran Student Movement National Study Conference in 1979. The Bill Monroe stuff is from a really interesting show from a reel-to-reel tape made at a house party of the great fiddler Tex Logan in New Jersey. I'd like to have more of that show which also includes performances by a young David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Hazel Dickens and Bill in a few different band configurations with a host of jammers.. That one can be found on dime from time to time. The Leesport Farmers Market hosted a few bluegrass shows in the early 90's notably the Tony Rice Unit and this Seldom Scene performance. Larry Sparks version of Dark Hollow is my hands-down favorite, as is this very spacey version of 'Doin' My Time' with John Hartford and Vassar Clements, et al.

Enjoy!

BMU 4 - (mostly) electric mix

Black Mountain Underground/Podcast 4 – electric mix

Alright friends, here is the first podcast of some of the music that I personally produce (write, record, perform), at times for a living. I'm not gonna call it an episode of Black Mountain Underground per se, as there's none of the usually chatter from me as an intro/outro or theme music, etc...also, it's my music presented, not others' which basically fuels this by inspiration, so we'll just look at it that way and you can provide whatever narrative and perspective you might need for yourself in your head as you listen along...For those of you who don't know, I started a band in the late 90's called Stone Poets with a group of very talented players from the State College, PA music scene: Rev. James Harton, a talented friend and valued (former) roommate who not only fixes all kinds of keyboard instruments, most notably accordions and Hammond organs, but plays them exceptionally well; Dr. Dave Mudgett, super-intelligent computer sciences professor at Penn State who, when known for his rock-a-billy and blues guitar playing, decided to master the pedal-steel and did so by sitting in regularly with Stone Poets who were the band in town playing alt/country music at that time during an early residency at Zeno's (where we still play every Sunday) -it didn't take him long to master it, and that was maybe '97 or so, but he still is getting better if that is possible, and the dimensions to his pedal-steel playing just keep expanding and his deftness sharpening; and last but not least is John (JK) Kennedy, who was killing on mostly rock and roll bass grooves when I met him, but after the purchase of his acoustic upright and years of playing with many/most of the most talented folk and roots players in State College his playing has expanded to the level of 'force to be reckoned with' and completely dependable in every musical situation; lest it be thought of any other way, I love these guys and am just so happy to be able to continue playing with them, and to bring you this show which features their skills-I may be singing and playing guitar and harp, but these guys are the ones making the magic while that's going on.
For this particular show, drummer par excellence Matt Cullen (playing in the above video) came along from the area I am currently living, the Berks County area of Pennsylvania near Reading. Matt comes from a real distinguished local musical family and plays with many different local projects of varying styles, all consummately. He will be joining me on the 'Acoustic Jerry Project' this coming February in Wilkes-Barre, plays all over my last album 'Notes from the Crossroads' and is currently bringing in the folks with the 'Good Lovin' Jam Band' (a project born of two, Pangea and Neo Trio). He doesn't always play with the Poets as drummer but when he does, I know I can depend on him to be there no matter in which direction the setlist may veer. He can suss out a feel like no one and easily move from light folk to grooving funk to flat-out rock, sometimes within the same song...
